Ryan is an attorney at Hunton & Williams LLP with specialized expertise in corporate and non-profit governance and significant experience advising boards of directors on governance and related compliance issues. He has previously served as outside counsel to a prominent local youth sports organization on governance reforms and related organizational issues, and has unique insight into comparative and best practices for youth sports organization boards. He has also served on numerous boards of directors for local legal and other organizations where he has served as a key advisor on governance issues.
As a parent of three young kids, Ryan has been actively involved in VYS for years as a coach at various levels, including house, crossover, all-stars, and the travel academy. He is currently a coach in the VYS Spirit travel academy and the U7B house league. He holds both the USSF E and F coaching licenses from U.S. Soccer and numerous other technical diplomas and certifications. He is a passionate supporter of the Positive Coaching Alliance and the Changing the Game Project within his age groups and across multiple youth sport leagues in Vienna.
As a player, Ryan played soccer at almost every level and continues to play regularly in the VYS parent league and in VYS-sponsored pick-up games.
I believe that VYS has experienced significant, positive change over the past five years, with more and more Vienna families participating in VYS soccer and becoming members of our club as a result. This growth has been fantastic for the club and, with the expansion of Tysons Corner and the improving quality of our programs, I believe that we will continue to grow as a club for many years to come.
As with any organization that grows very quickly, I believe it is critically important for the club to update its governance structure in order to ensure transparency and responsiveness to the membership and provide for a highly professional and efficient environment for the VYS board, committees, officers, and staff to operate. The current Board has begun the process of modernizing our governance structure and should be commended for that effort. There is still more work to do in the next year, however, and I believe that my professional experience in advising corporate, non-profit, and other local youth sports organization boards on such governance issues will be an asset to VYS as it grows.
In addition, I am familiar with the demands of an all-volunteer board and believe that I have the time, commitment, and desire to be an active, contributing member of the VYS board. As a parent and coach of kids in the younger age groups, with relevant experience across house, all-star, crossover and travel programs, I believe that I will be able to bring a unique and broad-based perspective to the board. Finally, as someone who will likely be heavily involved in the club as a parent and coach for the next decade or more, I am fully invested in the club’s long-term future.
