Melissa is a former collegiate player at Stanford University, was a Region IV ODP player, and two-sport high school All-American in soccer and swimming. After completing her playing career, Melissa began coaching in the Palo Alto Soccer Club working primarily with U9 to U12 girls’ teams. Upon moving to Virginia in 2002, Melissa was hired by Arlington Travel Soccer Club as a professional coach and coached teams in the U9 to U12 age groups.
After coaching in Arlington, Melissa moved to Vienna and began coaching her own children in VYS at all levels within VYS including house, crossover, all-stars and the travel academy. She was also a house commissioner for four years. Melissa is currently a coach in the VYS Spirit Academy and the U5B house league. With almost fifteen years of coaching experience, Melissa is a strong supporter of the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Growing up, I benefited from the tireless efforts of adults in my community who ensured that I had not only excellent training opportunities, but that I also learned important life lessons and developed a passion for the game. My goal as an active parent and coach in VYS has been to provide that same opportunity to the children who play soccer in our community.
As a coach who has worked at all levels within VYS, I am aware of the critical role fields play in the development of our children, whether they are young players taking part in their first season or aspiring collegiate athletes. I will be able to bring that knowledge and experience to bear during critical decisions that the Board and its Committees make in the upcoming year regarding field allocation and development. Given my professional background and knowledge of VYS gained through my involvement over the past several years, I am well-suited to assist VYS take advantage of the Tysons Corner Area expansion and represent VYS’s interests in the continued development and implementation of the Tysons Corner Master Plan which currently calls for the creation of 20 new athletic fields in and surrounding Vienna.
Lastly, I am passionate about creating a highly effective soccer club that meets the varied needs of its membership across all age groups and programs. I was the only girl on my soccer team until third grade, and nothing makes me happier to see such a transformation in youth soccer as evidenced by the number of girls playing in our community and women coaching our teams and serving in leadership roles. I will work hard to represent the interests of our children and families so that they too can develop a life-long love of the game.
