As a Referee: Al has reached the level of Grade 5 Referee, a grade that only one-half of one percent of all referees ever attain, with a USSF recommended assignment level of all youth games and adult games, including first division adult matches, and assistant referee in professional league and international cup games.
Al’s performance has been assessed at least 65 times, primarily at the Grade 5 level, without a single failing grade. He has officiated over 3,000 matches, including youth house and youth travel leagues at every age group; adult men, adult women, and adult co-ed leagues; youth, adult men, adult women, and adult co-ed State Cup; youth Olympic Development Program District, State, and Regional tournaments; adult men, adult women, and adult co-ed Regional and National tournaments; adult men, adult women, and adult co-ed U.S. Open Cup, State and Regional tournaments; TACA Cup competitions, including semi-final and final matches; African Friendship Tournament; high school matches and tournaments, including District, Regional, and State Finals; hundreds of tournaments in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, West Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Florida, Canada, and elsewhere.
As a Referee Instructor: Al taught certification and re-certification courses to over 2,000 referees at Grade 12, 9, 8, 7, 6, and 5 levels, the courses lasting from 3 hours to 16 hours of instruction, and involving both classroom and field work for new referees and higher level re-certifying referees.
As a Referee Assessor: Al has assessed the performance of approximately 400 referees who were either attempting to advance to a higher grade, (i.e., Grade 8 to Grade 7), or who were attempting to maintain their current grade of Grade 7, 6, or 5. He regularly evaluated, formally or anonymously, referees about whom a complaint had been made, with recommendations of corrective action upon verification of an issue. He was selected to assess referees chosen to officiate youth State Cup and ODP matches.
Player: college plus 15 years on adult men’s teams.
Coach: house, travel, adult men’s team.
Administration: As VP of Referees for VYS for past 5 years I have been responsible for investigating and resolving issues involving referees, whether raised by the referee, a coach, a parent, a player, or any other person. I give guidance, assistance, and direction to members of the Board, referee instructors, referees, and persons desiring to become a referee on a myriad of issues such as the Laws of the Game, resources at the local, State, and National level, and best practices. I have extensive experience as a member of various boards of directors for not-for-profit organizations, including serving as the President of the largest soccer referee assigning organization in Virginia. I have owned my own law firm since 1980. During my tenure as VP of Referees there has been a steady decline in the number of complaints involving referees and in the physical assault and verbal abuse of referees to where there have been none this season.
With my unique combination of experience and the breadth and depth of knowledge I possess, I believe I am very well qualified to continue in the position of VP of Referees.
