Team Captains
Before the first game of the season a vote was held and the Vipers team captains were elected for the season – congratulations to Henry, Ryan and Evan who will represent the team during spring 2006 play.
Spring 2006 Season - Top Scorers
3 goals - Camron
2 goals each – Dave, Jun, James
1 goal each – Matt M, Michael P, Evan
TSC Alliance 90/91 1:2 VYS Vipers
Sunday, April 2 – 11AM - Western Regional Park #4, Woodbine, MD
Half-Time 1:0
Vipers’ scorers – Jun, Matt M
VYS Vipers opened their spring season league campaign on a beautiful turf field that had only been played on for the first time the day before. The weather was fresh for the first weekend of April but the sun made it a warmer than expected day. The Vipers pressed in the first half but ended the half 1-0 down – a shot parried onto the post fell to a TSC Alliance 90/91 player who reacted first, scoring the opening goal. The Vipers played more to their own strengths in the second half and a sweet volley from Jun was followed by a clinical strike from Matt M, for a good solid come-from-behind win.
VYS Vipers 2:2 SAC United Classic
Sunday, April 9 – 12:30PM – Colvin Run ES, Vienna, VA
Half-Time 1:1
Vipers’ scorers – Michael P, James
For the first weekend of spring break the Vipers had a few players missing. The day was bright but cooled by a wind that played a part in the game. The Vipers were a goal down in 40 seconds when a shot from SAC United Classic deflected off a Vipers player and looped into the top corner of the goal. The Vipers showed character and equalized when Michael P. sent a corner kick over everyone and into the back of the net. At halftime the Vipers looked like they had a chance to win the game and went ahead in the second half when James coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper on a breakaway. As the second half wore on SAC United Classic piled on the pressure and the third time they hit the woodwork they pounced first on the rebound and tied the game.
FC Frederick Royal 3:1 VYS Vipers
Sunday, April 30 – 5:00PM – South Frederick ES, Frederick, MD
Half-Time 1:0
Vipers’ scorer – Camron
After a two weekends with no game the Vipers took the field in sunny Maryland and started very strongly. After several scoring opportunities in the first ten minutes the Vipers then fell behind to a through ball that was struck from 20 yards. The rest of the first half ended in a stalemate and a 1:0 half time score. The second half started like the first half ended and FC Frederick Royals scored an almost copycat second goal in the first ten minutes of the second half, breaking down the right side and scoring from distance. A third goal was added from the penalty spot before the Vipers started to get their heads up and play like they had in the first 10 minutes. The Vipers had the better of the last 20 minutes and after hitting the post and creating several opportunities to score Camron slotted a shot low to the bottom left corner of the goal with 5 minutes remaining. Despite a frenetic last 5 minutes the game finished with no more scoring.
VYS Vipers 0:3 BAC BC United
Saturday, May 6 – 4:00PM – Dunn Loring, Vienna, VA
Half-Time 0:1
This was simply not the Vipers day. The weather was nice, sunny with a light breeze but the Vipers turned up but did not play anywhere near their full potential. Too much individualism, some bad luck and a run of bad decisions under pressure led to one first half goal and two second half goals that produced a lopsided scoreline. The Vipers did create chances but cracked shots off the cross-bar and post – both bounced back into open play, in contrast to the other end where one of the goals conceded went in-off the far post.
CHAN Panthers 2:3 VYS Vipers
Sunday, May 7 – 4:30PM – Fox Mill, Herndon, VA
Half-Time 1:1
Vipers’ scorers – Camron, Dave (2)
With the focus for the day on playing as a team the Vipers started brightly and, as in previous games, passed crisply, moved well and looked on the verge of taking control. In the 20th minute the Vipers were caught flat-footed defending a corner kick and CHAN Panthers were the first to react, meeting the cross with a header. With half-time approaching, Camron picked the ball up wide on the right hand side and went on a sensational breakaway run and he finished with a looping shot into the top left hand corner of the goal. Early in the second half CHAN Panthers went ahead again when the Vipers failed to react in the penalty box and allowed a clean shot on goal. As the game progressed the Vipers attacked and scored two goals from long throw-ins that were both converted by Dave – one headed straight into the goal and the other placed into the bottom corner.
CSA Patriots 1:0 VYS Vipers
Saturday, May 13 – 10:00AM – BGE - Lusby, MD
Half-Time 1:0
An early morning trip deep into Maryland did not provide the result the team had hoped for on this double header weekend. Losing a first half goal to a well struck but largely speculative high ball was the difference between the teams. The Vipers picked up a yellow card and a red card so, despite the attraction of nearby Solomon Island, this is a game the Vipers need to forget and focus on their remaining fixtures.
VYS Vipers 1:2 CYA Tigers
Sunday, April 9 – 10:30AM – Colvin Run ES, Vienna, VA
Half-Time 0:1
Vipers’ scorer – Evan (PK)
Back on home field the Vipers started off looking to bounce back from the long trip on Saturday with a fixture against the table topping CYA Tigers. After the Tigers took an early lead following a goal scored from a tight angle, the game settled down and despite chances at both ends there was no further score before half-time. In the second half the Vipers started attacking more and won a penalty kick when Matt M was taken down closing in on goal. Evan stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to even up the game. The Vipers applied more pressure and created a number of good chances. After seeing one of the Vipers shots come back off the post the Tigers broke quickly and scored the winning goal.
SYA Phoenix 0:1 VYS Vipers
Sunday, May 21 – 11:30AM – EC Lawrence Park – Centerville, VA
Half-Time 0:1
Vipers’ scorer – Jun
The opportunity to play on a turf field allowed the Vipers to build on recent practices and play a crisp passing game. The surface allowed the Vipers to look for passes and make good runs off the ball. In the first half the Vipers had many chances but it was not until 2 minutes before half-time that a quick throw from Alistair to Jun produced the winning goal. In the second half the Vipers worked hard to get a second goal but, despite continuing to move the ball well, they could not benefit from the pressure. They weathered a late challenge from SYA Phoenix as time ran out on another VYS Vipers victory.
VYS Vipers 2:1 GSC Phoenix
Sunday, June 11 – 4:30 PM – Providence Park – Fairfax, VA
Vipers’ scorers – Camron, James
In a strange schedule a trip to Fairfax to end the season was classified as a home game. The Vipers needed a win to finish the season with a .500 record which would be an improvement over their previous and first season in NCSL. After taking the lead with goals from Camron and James the Vipers lost a goal but held on to win the game and finish the division tied for fourth place that would be good enough to send them up a division for the fall season.
