Following a championship win at the VIP Columbus Day Tournament, the VYS Comets Team also captured the U9 Girl’s Division Championship at the FPYC Liberty Cup Tournament. The Comets went undefeated in 4 games!
The Comets started their Saturday morning bright and early with a 7 to 1 win against the BRYC Fire. In the afternoon, Comets came out on top of a great match up beating LOUD White 2 to 1. Their 3rd win Sunday morning against the SYC Explosion in a score of 6 to 0, solidified their spot in the finals against the SYA Blaze. The Blaze also went undefeated in their tournament bracket until they faced the Comets in the Championship match up; a hard fought battle with a tremendous amount of hustle shown on both sides.
The Comets found formidable opponents in the Blaze who used their size and strength effectively against a smaller Comets team. In the end the Comets’ speed and agility blazed their path to VICTORY. The Comets took an early 1-0 lead which they held until the second half when the Blaze came back to tie the game. A few key defensive plays kept the Comets’ opponents scoreless through the early part of that second half when the Blaze rallied to score their single goal of the game. At about the 5 minute mark and facing a probable shootout, the Comets reignited their offensive attack. A lightening quick throw in, followed in with a key pass to the center resulted in the winning goal with less than a minute left in the game. Hollywood could not have scripted it better and Comet fans celebrated like they won the lottery.
CONGRATULATIONS to the entire U9 VYS Comets Team and special thanks to the Fairfax Police Youth Club for hosting a very successful tournament! Over 265 teams from VA, MD, DC, WV, CN, PA & NJ played nearly 530 games that weekend.
Dedicated in memory of Judy Ravensteijn, beloved mother of Coach Emil and grandmother to Hannah.
