Coach's Blog - 05/28/08
What an incredible weekend of soccer! The competition at this year's Virginian was tough, and our Comets consistently stepped up their game to meet the challenge. We faced some tough teams from Sterling, Arlington, Wyckoff NJ, Stafford, and Reston. The championship game against Reston United was a great climax to a beautiful Memorial Day weekend. I know both teams were tense after we completed regulation and both overtimes in a 0-0 tie and went to penalty kicks. I spoke with the Reston coach briefly after the 2nd overtime completed, and this was the first experience either team had with penalty kicks to decide the outcome of a game. Reilly and Maddie did an incredible job for us in goal, and they were supported by a tremendous effort in the field by our entire team. All of the Comets should be proud of their hard work, level of achievement, and continuing progress as a team. Our Comets have made it to the championship game in 3 of our last 4 tournaments, and taken the championship in two. Counting our tournament games, the Comets spring season record is 12-3-1 in our last 16 games. It is great to see the way they have bonded and support each other, both on and off the field.
The coaches did not select a 'Player of the Week' this week. We had so many noteworthy performances during our tournament games that we did not feel it appropriate to single out one individual for recognition. The entire team was recognized for their achievement as a Virginian Silver Finalist, which is a great achievement.
As you know, our last 2 regular season games are coming up this weekend. Our first game will be against the Alexandria Revolution White on Sat. Our 2nd will be against the SYA Storm on Sun, who had a similar experience to ours in the Virginian - winning all their regular and semifinal games and losing the gold level championship in the Virginian to the NVSC Majestics 0-1.
In goal this weekend we're going to change the rotation a bit after the tournament. It will be Macy and Alyssa on Sat, then Maddie and Audra on Sun.
Gooooo Comets!
