Congratulations to Phoenix '99! #viennaproud

The U16 Girls VYS Phoenix '99 competed the past few days in the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships.

The team opened up against the Arundel Soccer Association Premier (MD). Phoenix fell behind on three different occasions, but kept fighting back to tie the game each time. In spite of dominating possession most of the game, they could not take control of the scoreboard and ended in a 3-3 tie. Goals were scored by Anna Davis, Tess Mahon-Kuzin and Rachel Jackson in the last two minutes of the game.

The second game pitted Phoenix against the Region I defending champions, FC Pennsylvania Strikers. Phoenix proved they deserved to play at the national level, controlling possession throughout the first half. A well placed corner kick, late in the second half by FCPA gave them the lead. But in the second half Phoenix fought back, tying the match on a goal by Rachel Jackson, and then taking the lead on a goal by Whitney Wiley. This set up a must win game against the Fuller Hamlets (MA) in order to advance to the semifinals.

Sunday's game started with the Phoenix trying to find their rhythm. Once they did, they began to dominate possession of the ball. However, numerous shots failed to find the back of the net. The fuller Hamlets keeper and defense kept a clean sheet, not allowing Phoenix to get on the scoreboard. The match ended in a scoreless tie. FCPA Strikers won their final game, advancing them to the semifinals.

Phoenix '99 was the first VYS girls' team to go to the Region I finals in 30 years. Congratulations to all the girls in putting forth a tremendous effort to win the Virginia State Cup and going unbeaten in the Region I Championships.

Phoenix '99's season is not over. In another week they head to Aurora, Colorado for the US Club Soccer National Premier League Championships. Phoenix '99 is the first VYS team to ever compete in the NPL Championships. The Championships open up on July 14 with Phoenix playing ISC Gunners G99A From Washington state. This will be followed by teams from New Jersey and New Mexico.

Phoenix '99 will be holding a fundraiser at the Vienna Chipotle on Monday, July 11 from 5:00 - 9:00 PM.
