Referee Certification

Referee Certification

Vienna Youth Soccer hires certified referees to officiate play in its recreational House Soccer Program. Recreational House League play is an excellent learning environment and opportunity for new referees to begin their careers and to develop their skills as a soccer referee.

Individuals age 13 or older interested in becoming a soccer referee are encouraged to pursue referee training and certification. Parent/child referee teams are common and a superb family activity. As your skills improve, you can pursue advanced training and certification to serve at more competitive levels of play. Referees improve their knowledge of soccer, enjoy much soccer action and outdoor exercise, and earn a fee while serving the most popular game in the world.

New referees must attend 16 hours of instruction, pass a certification test, and purchase a uniform. To help offset these initial expenses, VYS will reimburse new referees $25 after they have served 5 VYS games, and will reimburse the full certification fee after serving 10 VYS games.

REFEREE REQUIREMENT FOR GAME PLAY

The referees required for a VYS house/recreational club league game are as follows:

  • U11 and over -  (1) Center Referee and (2) Assistant Referees.

  • U9-U10 -  (1) Center Referee only.

  • U5-U8 -  No referees.

The referees required for an ODSL travel league game are as follows:

  • U11 and over -  (1) Center Referee and (2) Assistant Referees.

  • U9 - U10 -  (1) Center Referee only (experienced and preferably age 16 or older)

  • Referees must have at least one season of experience (approximately 10 games) before requesting any travel games regardless of age. You may email the referee assignor to request an exception.

  • A Center Referee must be at least two years older than the division age group of play. For example, the Center Referee for a U11 game must be age 13 or older. Also, a newly certified (inexperienced) referee may only be a Center Referee for U10 and under house/recreational club league games (no travel league games). New referees may NOT request to work any travel games without express permission from the referee assignor. Contact the VYS Referee Assignor to request an exception to this age restriction for a particular game.

  • All assistant referees may referee U12-14 house games. Assistant Referees for U15 & older house games must be at least 14 years of age and have one season of experience. Assistant Referees will be assigned to travel games at the discretion of the Referee Assignor and must have at least one season of experience.
