VYS Coaches Win Pollin Award
Wizards Team With PCA For Award

VYS congratulates Michele Sullivan and Drew Fielding on being recipients of the Pollin Award, honoring their dedication to youth sports. Michele and Drew coach a VYS U8 girls House team.

The Pollin Award was created to honor those individuals who show an outstanding dedication to their community.

Named after Irene and Abe Pollin, Chairpersons for the Washington Wizards and Verizon Center. The Pollin’s vision is matched solely by their willingness to help improve the quality of life in this community and around the world.

This year the Washington Wizards teamed up with the nonprofit organization Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to honor the Washington DC Metropolitan coaches. PCA’s mission is to "transform youth sports so sports can transform youth." Since 2001, PCA has operated in the Washington, DC area, impacting tens of thousands of local youths. Each award recipient receives two (2) complementary tickets to a designated Wizards game. The winner is recognized in the game and receives the award on court.

VYS Pickup Soccer

Every country has a different word for it. In the United States, we call it “pick-up soccer.” In Trinidad, it’s “taking a sweat.” In England, it’s “having a kick-about.” In Brazil, the word is “pelada,” which literally means “naked”—the game stripped down to its core

VYS and DC United trainers will be at Marshall High School stadium field, 1:00 - 4:00 pm - Sunday March 14 for pick up soccer.   Arrive and depart anytime between 1 and 4.   In pick up results are temporary.  Pick up creates an environment where players can be creative with out fear of failure.  All ages are welcome and encouraged to come out for a "kick about".

VYS will repeat this:
March 21@ Madison High School (we hope to have a DC United player appearance)
March 28 @ Marshall High  School

There is a chance of showers on Sunday but it is supposed to be warm.  The game will go one, please dress appropriately.

Field Updates

All GRASS fields are closed until further notice.

Madison HS and Marshall HS Stadium fields are closed during the week.  They will be open for scheduled practices on the weekends.

Marshall HS Practice field is open on weeknights and weekends by appointment.

To inquire about weekend availability, please email Liz at PracticeFields@VYS.org

Spring Player Registration Update
(Please note: U12 Boys division is no longer accepting registrations for spring)

Please click here to register on-line.

Regular Spring 2010 soccer registration is now closed, but the VYS registrar is accepting online and mail-in applications for House recreation players, which will be placed on a waiting list. The waitlist does not apply to players registering for travel teams or the Parent League.

Age Group Commissioners will make every effort to accept as many players as possible from the waiting list, but there are no guarantees, given team size and availability of coaches. Registration fees will be returned if you do not receive notification that your player has been accepted on a team.

Please contact your player’s Age Group Commissioner prior to registering to see whether their specific division is still accepting players (see Contacts on the website for email and phone information).

Note: First-time registrants (except travel players) must also include a copy of the player’s birth certificate with their application for proof of age. Please mail forms, including registration fee, to: Vienna Youth Soccer, P.O. Box 993, Vienna, VA.  22183.

Note: Late “mail-in” registrations must also include a $25 late fee, or the application will be returned.

For further information, please email the VYS Registrar at registrar@vys.org.

Artificial Turf Fields & Snow Removal

Do not shovel, use manual or machine driven equipment, spread salt, or apply any other chemical or material agent trying to get snow and ice to melt quicker on artificial turf fields! At the Feb. 17 Fairfax County Athletic Council meeting, warnings on this subject were given by FCPS Athletic Director – Bill Curran and the FCPA Director - Todd Johnson. Damage has already occurred at fields around the area and attempts to hurry the natural process potentially voids the warranties but more importantly the damage it causes is MAJOR. The fields will naturally melt quicker than grass so we must wait. Regardless on what’s written by the turf field manufacturers or other website research people have done to justify these attempts, all School and Park Authority facilities do not, and will not allow any manual snow removal to be done. The artificial turf fields are million dollar investments and trying to get a few more days of use does nothing but cause damage

In Memoriam: Frank Buzek

It is with great sadness that Vienna Youth Soccer announces the passing of our devoted coach, referee, former Board member and wonderful friend, Frank Buzek. Frank passed away on January 5 after a five-year battle with cancer.  Frank’s acts of volunteerism with VYS for many years touched the lives of hundreds of children in our community, and will continue to affect the lives of those that knew him for years to come.

As a dedicated volunteer for VYS, Frank spent countless hours teaching the game to our children the right way.  Those that came under Frank’s guidance and leadership not only learned about soccer and developed their soccer skills, they also learned about and developed life lessons and skills, such as teamwork, commitment and dedication.

VYS recently partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance ("PCA"), a program for coaches, parents and players which focuses on learning and applying valuable life lessons through sports, not just winning at all costs.  Frank and his perpetual enthusiasm and positive attitude truly exemplified those principles, creating a supportive environment for developing and improving our children’s soccer skills and sportsmanship.  Accordingly, in Frank’s memory, VYS will be instituting an annual "Frank Buzek PCA Coach of the Year Award."

There will be a memorial service for Frank on Friday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 543 Beulah Road, with a reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Aaron and Emily Buzek College Fund, 6477 Empty Song Road, Columbia, MD  21044.  Frank will be buried with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m.

Congratulations, Meena Rezazad
VYSA TOPSoccer Buddy/Volunteer of the Year

VYS is proud to announce that our very own Meena Rezazad has been chosen as the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) TOPSoccer Buddy/ Volunteer of the year.  TOPSoccer is a community-based training program for young athletes with disabilities organized and run by volunteers. VYS started a TOPSoccer program this Fall and Meena recruited and organized volunteer buddies to be part of the program. She reached out to her fellow team mates and peers and asked them to make a commitment, much like she had, to be a TOPSoccer Buddy.

Meena plays travel soccer for the U14 Fusion Red team and has been selected for the Northern Virginia Olympic Development Program Team three years in a row. She has combined her passion for soccer with a desire to be involved in the community and help others.

The VYSA award recognizes volunteers that have gone above and beyond what is asked from them. During this TOPSoccer inaugural season, Meena was the go-to person who showed that she can easily adapt to any situation. She was often called to do many different tasks and  always stepped up to the plate.

Congratulations Meena! The TOPSoccer community and the entire VYS membership is very proud of you.

Letter From the President
The fall season for VYS is well underway so I would like to update the VYS community on some changes/improvements to our soccer program.
PCA - As part of our training program, VYS has entered into a partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance.  (PCA) is a non-profit organization that provides training and support to leaders, coaches and parents involved in sports organizations.  The PCA principles focus on "winning AND applying and learning valuable life lessons" not just on "winning-at-all-costs". PCA is a highly respected organization and I am excited to be able to bring this type of training to VYS. In August the Board of Directors attended a PCA Leadership Workshop  and close to 50% of VYS coaches (House and Travel) attended Double Goal Coach 1 training sessions. Over the winter and next spring, VYS will offer additional training sessions for coaches and parents.
On Saturday October 3, look for VYS BOD members on the fields of VYS games. They will be wearing red shirts and handing out "We Honor the Game" stickers to encourage respect for players, coaches, referees and fans and to reinforce the PCA principles of a Positive Coaching Culture.
The BOD hopes that PCA partnership will help us reinforce and strengthen the VYS culture - in both House and Travel soccer- of a supportive environment for developing and improving our players’ soccer ability and sportsmanship. This "double goal" of winning and using the sports experience to learn "life lessons" is the core of PCA. To learn more about the principles of PCA, visit www.positivecoach.org or visit the VYS website and click on PCA under Coaches or Parents.
New Website - VYS is pleased to announce a new and updated website – the address stays the same, www.vys.org but the information will be easier to access. Look for the new website later this week.
Field Development –Over the summer, VYS completed 3 field improvement projects:
-    Bermuda grass sod was installed at Colvin Run Elementary School in June and VYS started playing games on this lush field on Sept. 7.
-    Kilmer Middle School #2 (the small field inside the track) was sprigged with Bermuda grass and this has dramatically improved the playing surface.
-    Kilmer #1 had an elaborate French drain system installed to improve drainage and increase playing time on the field.

VYS also entered into a 3 year lease agreement with Christian Assembly for limited use of the school field during the week and on weekends. Currently the field is in adequate condition but VYS plans to upgrade the field over the next several seasons.
Thank you – VYS is a predominately volunteer organization and the thousands of hours provided by our dedicated members continue to be vital to deliver the key programs and projects that are critical to the ongoing success of VYS.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you to all our coaches, trainers, referees, volunteers, contributors and members for your time, support, and passion.  Your efforts are making a positive impact on the lives of thousands of children in our Vienna community.
Margaret Kerfoot
Richard Montano, VYS President Emeritus
2009 Champion of Character Award Winner

On Tuesday October, 6 the Fairfax County Athletic Council (FCAC) and CRS announced the winners of the 2009 Fairfax County Champions of Character Awards and Richard Montano, VYS President Emeritus, was selected from Providence District. This awards program honors youth, coaches and parents for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor. The winners were recognized by members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board at a ceremony on Tuesday evening at the Fairfax County Government Center.

In his five years as club president, Richard oversaw tremendous growth in the Vienna Youth Soccer Program – in membership and in enthusiasm. The changes can be attributed to Richard’s positive leadership. He established an environment of cooperation, where opposing viewpoints are encouraged and considered, all issues and proposals are discussed openly, and decisions are made with the children’s best interests in mind. Richard handles all issues and concerns judiciously and with care, consideration, and respect for all. One of Richard’s last acts as VYS President was to establish a TOPSoccer program within VYS. TOPSocer provides opportunities for children with mental or physical disabilities to learn and play soccer. Richard has never been one to seek the spotlight, preferring to attribute the club’s success to other volunteers and staff. However, it is clear that VYS would not be as successful and thriving as it is today without Richard’s leadership. His efforts as a VYS parent and role model will continue to affect the lives of thousands of children for years to come.
